James R. Slack was born September 28, 1818 in Buck County, Pennsylvania. He attended an Academy at Newton, Pennsylvania where he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1840. He married Ann P. Thomson and they had four children. He was the Huntington County, Indiana Auditor 1842-1851, Member of the Indiana State Senate 1851-52, 1859, and 1861.
